There are a number of different microphones that are available to use with your recording devices and also your DSLR’s.
The two most commonly used microphone are tie clip or lavalier microphones (omnidirectional) which are used for interviews and record sound in all directions. Second are shotgun microphones (directional) which are mainly used for general audio recording and record sounds in front of the microphone.
One drawback of being a one man operator is that you have to try and juggle capturing both visuals and audio at the same time which is not always ideal. Shotgun microphones don’t always produce the best results when put on top of the camera as they can’t isolate sounds; they simply record all sound that is in front of the camera which may not always be desirable.
